Nicolas Ceccaldi
Viral Flooring

Gaga presents "Viral Flooring", Nicolas Ceccaldi's new pastels. One of
the two dominant motifs here are close-ups on feet cropped from famous
paintings. This motif is repeated across the room and punctuated by
another recurring motif, variations on the portrait of the same man,
copied from a pastel by Rosalba Carriera.
In
the versions exhibited here, the sitter's benevolent expression has
been slightly intensified in order to achieve an equivocal effect. His
enquiring gaze is directed at eye level, assumably towards the feet:
where are they headed to and who sets them in motion? Are those poses
determined by muscle tension or by the floor's properties?
This
raises vast and difficult questions on the topic of free will. Perhaps
the foot poses depicted here are mere whirlpools forming and drifting
across the surface of the endlessly complex stream of reality.
